QUESTION: Who is required to have a South Dakota Electrician license?
ANSWER: The South Dakota Department of Labor & Regulation board must license any individual who is engaged in the electrical contracting business or is performing work as an Electrical Contractor, Journeyman Electrician, or Class B Residential Electrician.
QUESTION: What are the qualifications required for taking the South Dakota Electrician exam?
Electrical Journeyman License:
- After completing four years (for a total of 8,000 hours) as an apprentice working under an electrical contractor, you will be ready to write the journeyman’s exam.
- Journeyman to Class B electrician – must have at least two (2) years’ experience working under a Class B electrician or an electrical contractor, with a minimum of one (1) year experience in residential and farmstead wiring.
Electrical Contractor License:
- It will then take another two years as a journeyman (with a total of 4,000 hours of additional work under a contractor, including a minimum of 2,000 hours of commercial work) to write the electrical contractor’s exam.
- Class B electrician to Electrical Contractor – must have at least one (1) additional year in commercial wiring under the employment and supervision of a licensed electrical contractor.

QUESTION: How do I sign up for the South Dakota Electrician exam?
ANSWER: You must fill out and submit the Application for an Electrician’s License to the South Dakota Electrical Commission to be approved to take the exam.
Once your application is approved, you will have 90 days to make arrangements to take the test. For computer-based testing through Pearson VUE, you may schedule an examination online at PearsonVUE. Follow the directions under “Contractor/Trade Licensing.” You may also schedule an examination over the phone by contacting Pearson VUE at 1-877- 234-6082.

530 South Dakota Electrical Contractor exam: consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 5 hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.
531 South Dakota Journeyman Electrician exam: consists of 80 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 4 hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.
533 South Dakota Class B Electrician exam: consists of 60 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 3 hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.
