QUESTION: Who is required to have an Alabama Electrician license?
ANSWER: All individuals engaged as Electrical Contractors, and all Journeyman Electricians performing work, must be licensed by the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board.
QUESTION: What are the qualifications required for taking the Alabama Electrician exam?
ANSWER: Journeyman must document (work affidavits) a minimum of 8,000 hours of experience that shows you have the necessary qualifications, training, and technical knowledge to install electrical wiring, apparatus or equipment, light, heat, or power.
- An applicant for a statewide Journeyman Electrician examination may substitute one year of education in an approved electrical curriculum or apprenticeship program for one thousand hours of electrical experience for a maximum of two thousand hours of the required eight thousand hours.
- The applicant must provide appropriate documentation of said education or apprenticeship program, subject to the approval of the Board.
QUESTION: Is there reciprocity in Alabama for the electrician exams?
ANSWER: Alabama has reciprocity with Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. For contact information click here.
QUESTION: How do I sign up for the Alabama Electrician exam?
ANSWER: You must fill out and submit the Journeyman License by Examination Application paper form and all documentation to ABEC.
Upon approval from the Board, you will receive a notification and have 10 days to submit an exam fee. You will then contact PROV to schedule an appointment at 801-733-4455 or online.
QUESTION: Are there any accommodations for the Alabama Electrician Exam?
ANSWER: Prov complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in providing special accommodations for candidates who require additional assistance during the testing process. If candidates feel that they qualify for special accommodation during testing, they should contact Prov at (801) 733-4455. Prov will require written documentation from a licensed physician or psychologist documenting the disability and further require a request describing the requested remedy. Prov will then work directly with the candidates to make the accommodations they will need in order to complete their examination.
QUESTION: How many questions and how long is the Alabama Electrician exam?
ANSWER: The Journeyman Electrician exam consists of 80 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 4 hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

- The NFPA 70 – National Electrical Code, 2023 Edition.
QUESTION: What can I bring to the PROV testing center?
ANSWER:
- Pencils.

QUESTION: Why should someone study this course if the Alabama electrical license exam is an open-book exam?
ANSWER: The electrical licensing exam is very challenging and usually requires a month or more of preparation to pass.
The 2023 NEC is a large and complex publication containing over 800 pages of code. It is challenging to locate each correct article and answer in the time allowed during the exam without thorough preparation.
