QUESTION: Who is required to have a South Dakota Electrician license?

ANSWER: The South Dakota Electrical Commission must license any individual who is engaged in the electrical contracting business or is performing work as a Journeyman Electrician.


QUESTION: What are the qualifications required for taking the exam?

Electrical Journeyman License

  • Four years (for a total of 8,000 hours) as an apprentice working under an electrical contractor.
  • If you are working in South Dakota, you must be registered or be licensed in order for your working time to count toward the hours required to take the exams.
  • Must take and pass the exam.

QUESTION: How do I sign up for the exam?

ANSWER: You must fill out and submit the Application for an Electrician’s License form to the South Dakota Electrical Commission to be approved to take the exam.

Upon approval from the South Dakota Electrical Commission, you will receive a notification letter via mail. You will then be responsible for contacting ICC to pay and schedule for the examination. If you fail, you may retest unlimited, during your eligibility period.

The exam is administered by a third-party testing center, ICC International Code Council. You can contact PSI with any questions at (800) 733-9267 Hours of operation are 9 am to 5 pm Mon-Fri, (Pacific Time)

ANSWER: The Journeyman Electrician exam consists of 80 multiple-choice questions.  Test takers have 4 hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.
