QUESTION: Who is required to have an Arkansas Electrical License?

ANSWER: Any individual who completes installations of electric conductors and equipment within or on public and private buildings or other structures, including recreational vehicles, and floating buildings, and other premises such as yards, carnivals, parking and other lots, and industrial substations;

Or; Installations of conductors that connect to the supply of electricity and installations of other outside conductors on the premises.


QUESTION: What are the qualifications required for taking the Arkansas Electrician exam?

Master Electrician:

  1. A degree in electrical engineering plus two (2) years of construction-related experience; or
  2. Six (6) years experience in the construction industry, both residential and commercial, including two (2) years experience as a licensed journeyman electrician; or
  3. Any combination of training and experience as the Board may approve, such as formal electrical apprenticeship programs specifically approved by the board, on-the-job training specifically approved by the Board, or a combination of training and construction experience that is determined by the Board to be equivalent to

Residential Master Electrician:

  1. Three (3) years experience in the wiring of one (1) or two (2) family dwellings including one (1) year experience as a licensed residential journeyman; or
  2. Any combination of training and experience as the Board may approve as being equivalent to

Journeyman Electrician:

  1. Applicants who completed an apprenticeship program. Applicants who have completed a 4-year electrical construction apprenticeship program approved by the U. S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training shall have:
    • a. “Notice of Apprenticeship Committee Action – Released for Test/Completion” form from the applicant’s training program and approved by the Arkansas Office of Skills Development; or

      b. if the applicant completed an apprenticeship program in another state, certification from the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training or the state agency responsible for oversight of apprenticeship programs of completion.

      c. The Board may approve an applicant without a Released for Test form in extenuating circumstances.

Residential Journeyman Electrician:

  1. Two (2) years experience in the wiring of one (1) or two (2) family dwellings;
  2. A two-year combination of training and experience as the Board may approve, such as formal apprenticeship programs approved by the Board; and
  3. A signed letter from the applicant’s school verifying the applicant’s hours.

QUESTION: How do I sign up for the Arkansas Electrician exam?

To schedule an examination by phone, candidates can text or call Prov at 801-733-4455. Prov scheduling staff is available 8:00 a.m. through 6:00 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday.


QUESTION: Are there any Exam Accommodations?

ANSWER: Prov complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in providing special accommodations for candidates that require additional assistance during the testing process. If candidates feel that they qualify for a special accommodation during testing, they should contact Prov at (801) 733-4455. Prov will require written documentation from a licensed physician or psychologist documenting the disability and further require a request describing the requested remedy. Prov will then work directly with the candidates to make the accommodations they will need in order to complete their exam.


QUESTION: How many questions and how long are the Arkansas Electrician exams?

ANSWER: The Master Electrician exam consists of 60 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 3 hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

The Residential Master Electrician exam consists of 60 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 3 hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

The Journeyman Electrician exam consists of 60 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 3 hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

The Residential Journeyman Electrician exam consists of 40 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 2 hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

The following codebooks are allowed by the testing center.

QUESTION: What can I bring into the Prov testing center?

ANSWER:

  • Approved references
  • Pencils
  • Calculator. Only simple 4-function calculators are permitted. PDAs, tablets, cell phones, or other special calculators are NOT permitted.

QUESTION: Where do I go to take my Arkansas Electrician license exams?

ANSWER: Within Arkansas, Prov has eight (8) testing centers where candidates can take their examinations. These testing centers are in Conway, El Dorado, Fayetteville, Fort Smith, Jonesboro, Little Rock, Paragould, and Searcy.
