QUESTION: Who is required to have a Texas Electrician license?
ANSWER: The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation must license any individual who is engaged in the electrical contracting business or is performing work as a Master, Journeyman or Residential Electricians.
QUESTION: What are the qualifications required for taking the exam?
Master Electrician: Must fulfill the requirements of either A or B;
A) Passed the Texas Master Electrician Exam and Held a journeyman license for at least two years, and Completed at least 12,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master electrician or master sign electrician. Or
B) Held a master electrician license issued by a Texas municipality or region that has elected to
discontinue issuing or renewing licenses and held the municipal or regional license for the preceding year.
You must submit your application within 90 days of the date the municipality or region stops issuing or renewing licenses.
Journeyman Electrician: Must fulfill the requirements of either A or B;
A) Passed the Texas Journeyman Electrician Exam and completed at least 8,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master electrician. Or
B) Held a master electrician license issued by a Texas municipality or region that has elected to
discontinue issuing or renewing licenses and held the municipal or regional license for the preceding year.
You must submit your application within 90 days of the date the municipality or region stops issuing or renewing licenses.
Residential Wireman: Must fulfill the requirements of either A or B;
A) Passed the Texas Residential Wireman Exam and completed at least 4,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master electrician or residential wireman. Or
B) Held a master electrician license issued by a Texas municipality or region that has elected to
discontinue issuing or renewing licenses and held the municipal or regional license for the preceding year.
You must submit your application within 90 days of the date the municipality or region stops issuing or renewing licenses.
QUESTION: How do I sign up for the exam?
ANSWER: You must fill out and submit the Individual Examination Application paper form and all documentation to PSI.
Upon approval from the Board, you will receive a notification letter via mail. You will then be responsible for contacting PSI to pay and schedule for the examination. If you fail, you may retest unlimited, during your eligibility period.
The exam is administered by a third-party testing center, PSI Exams. You can contact PSI with any questions at (800) 733-9267 Hours of operation are Monday through Friday between 5:30 am and 8:00 pm, or Saturday-Sunday between 7:00 am and 3:30 pm, Mountain Time.
QUESTION: How long is the exam?
ANSWER: The Master Electrician exam consists of a two-part exam Part 1 is 75 NEC multiple-choice Knowledge questions. Test takers have 150 Minutes to complete this exam. Part 2 is 33 Calculation questions. Test takers have 170 Minutes to complete this exam. The exam is computer-based.
