QUESTION: Who is required to have a Texas Electrician license?
ANSWER: The Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation must license any individual engaged in the electrical contracting business or performing work as a Master Electrician, Journeyman Electrician, or Residential Wireman.
QUESTION: What are the qualifications required for taking the Texas Electrician exam?
Master Electrician: Must fulfill the following requirements;
Held a journeyman license for at least two years and completed at least 12,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master electrician licensed in Texas.
Journeyman Electrician: Must fulfill the following requirements;
Completed at least 8,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master electrician licensed in Texas.
Residential Wireman: Must fulfill the following requirements;
Completed at least 4,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master electrician or residential wireman licensed in Texas.
QUESTION: Is there reciprocity in Texas for the electrician exams?

QUESTION: How do I sign up for the Texas Electrician exam?
ANSWER: You must fill out and submit the Individual Examination Application paper form and all documentation to TDLR.
Upon approval from the Board, you will receive a notification letter via mail. You will then contact PSI to pay and schedule the examination. If you fail, you may retest unlimitedly during your eligibility period.
A third-party testing center, PSI Exams administer the exam. You can contact PSI with any questions at (800) 733-9267. The hours of operation are Monday through Friday between 5:30 am and 8:00 pm or Saturday through Sunday between 7:00 am and 3:30 pm, Mountain Time.
QUESTION: Are there any accommodations for the Texas Electrician Exams?
ANSWER: All PSI examination centers are equipped to provide access in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and exam accommodations will be made in meeting a candidate’s needs. A candidate with a disability or a candidate who would otherwise have difficulty taking the examination should request for alternative arrangements by Clicking Here.
QUESTION: How many questions and how long are the Texas Electrician exams?
ANSWER: The Master Electrician exam consists of a two-part exam. Part 1 is 75 NEC multiple-choice knowledge questions. Test takers have 150 Minutes to complete this portion of the exam. Part 2 is 33 Calculation questions. Test takers have 170 Minutes to complete this portion of the exam. The exam is computer-based.
The Journeyman Electrician exam consists of 80 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 4 hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.
The Residential Wireman exam consists of 80 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 240 minutes to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.
The following codebooks are allowed by the testing center.

QUESTION: Why should someone study this course if the Texas electrical license exam is an open-book exam?
ANSWER: The electrical licensing exam is very challenging and usually requires a month or more of preparation to pass.
The 2023 NEC is a large and complex publication containing over 800 pages of code. It is challenging to locate each correct article and answer in the time allowed during the exam without thorough preparation.
Our course is designed to familiarize you with the 2023 NEC. You will know precisely how to find the correct answers in the code when you take your exam.
