QUESTION: Who is required to have a Montana Electrician license?
ANSWER: The Montana State Electrical Board must license any individual who is engaged in the electrical contracting business or is performing work as a Master/Journeyman/Residential Electrician.
Individual jurisdictions may have other licensing requirements.
QUESTION: What are the qualifications required for taking the exam?
RESIDENTIAL ELECTRICIAN: (Must meet Educational OR Experience requirement)
Educational Requirements – Completion of an approved residential apprenticeship program in the electrical trade or completion of an appropriate training program conducted by a bona fide union or trade association.
Experience Requirements –
a. A third-party verification of (4,000) hours of legally obtained practical experience in wiring for,
installing, and repairing of electrical apparatus and equipment for light, heat, and power in residential
construction consisting of less than five living units in a single structure.
Or;
b. Worked in the electrical maintenance field for at least (20,000) hours, accompanied by written
certification by the applicant’s employer that the applicant has attained at least (20,000) hours in the
electrical maintenance field while working for the employer. A minimum of (8,000) of these hours must
be practical experience.
JOURNEYMAN ELECTRICIAN: (Must meet Educational OR Experience requirement)
Educational Requirements – Education Requirements: Completion of an approved inside wireman apprenticeship program in the electrical trade or completion of an appropriate training program conducted by a bona fide union or trade
association.
Experience Requirements –
a. A third-party verification of (8,000) hours of legally obtained practical experience in wiring for,
installing, and repairing of electrical apparatus and equipment for light, heat, and power in
residential construction consisting of less than five living units in a single structure.
Or;
b. Worked in the electrical maintenance field for at least (20,000) hours, accompanied by written
certification by the applicant’s employer that the applicant has attained at least (20,000) hours in
the electrical maintenance field while working for the employer.
MASTER ELECTRICIAN: (Must meet Educational OR Experience requirement)
Educational Requirements – Written evidence of being a graduate as an electrical engineer of an accredited college or university and having a minimum of (2,000) hours of legally obtained practical experience.
Or;
Experience Requirements – A third-party verification of (8,000) hours of legally obtained journeyman level experience in wiring for, installing, and repairing of electrical apparatus and equipment for light, heat,
and power, with no less than 20 percent, but not more than 50 percent residential experience
QUESTION: How do I sign up for the exam?
ANSWER: You must fill out and submit the Individual Examination Application form to the Montana State Electrical Board to be approved to take the exam.
Upon approval from the Montana State Electrical Board, you will receive a notification letter via mail. You will then be responsible for contacting PSI to pay and schedule for the examination. If you fail, you may retest unlimited, during your eligibility period.
The exam is administered by a third-party testing center, PSI Exams. You can contact PSI with any questions at (800) 733-9267 Hours of operation are Monday through Friday between 5:30 am and 8:00 pm or Saturday-Sunday between 7:00 am and 3:30 pm, Mountain Time.
QUESTION: How long is the exam?
ANSWER: The Master Electrician exam consists of 80 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 240 minutes to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

The Journeyman Electrician exam consists of 60 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 180 minutes to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

The Montana Master/Journeyman/Residential Electrician exam is an open book four-choice multiple-choice exam. You will have four choices per question. Some questions may require mathematical computation. You are required to bring your own reference materials specified in the Candidate Bulletin.
