QUESTION: Who is required to have a Massachusetts Electrician license?

ANSWER: The Massachusetts Board of State Examiners must license any individual engaged in the electrical contracting business or who performs work as a Master or Journeyman Electrician.


QUESTION: What are the qualifications required for taking the Massachusetts Electrician exam?

Master Electrician:

  • Applicants must have an MA Journeyman license, having worked for at least one year and 150 hours of Board-Approved Education.

Journeyman Electrician:

  • Applicants must have 600 hours of Board-Approved Education, a 15-hour Continuing Education Code-Update Class from a board-approved Provider, and 8000 clock hours of work experience over not less than 4 years under the direct supervision of a Massachusetts licensed Journeyman.

QUESTION: Is there reciprocity in Massachusetts for the electrician exams?

ANSWER: The Board has entered such an agreement with the state of New Hampshire for the Journeyman and Master licenses, provided such license was obtained by examination in New Hampshire.


QUESTION: How do I sign up for the Massachusetts Electrician exam?

ANSWER: You must fill out and submit the Individual Examination Application paper form and all documentation to PSI. (Applications are in the back of the Examination Candidate Information Bulletin – CIB)

Upon approval from PSI, you will receive a notification letter via mail. You will then be responsible for contacting PSI to pay and schedule the examination. If you fail, you may retest unlimited during your eligibility period.

  • For the fastest and most convenient examination scheduling process, PSI recommends that you register for your examinations using the Internet. You register online by accessing PSI’s registration website https://testtakers.psiexams.com/mael. Internet registration is available 24 hours a day
  • OR: Call (855) 834-8745 to speak with a live registrar, available Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 10:00 pm, and Saturday-Sunday, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, Eastern Time.

QUESTION: Are there any accommodations for the Massachusetts Electrician Exams?

ANSWER: If you require special accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), please contact PSI at (800)733- 9267 or the Board office at (617)727-9931 to obtain an Accommodation Request Form. All examination centers are equipped to provide access in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and every reasonable accommodation will be made in meeting a candidate’s needs. Requests for any special accommodations should be made in writing, describing the specific accommodations that will be needed, and requests must include supporting documentation from a licensed professional. All requests for special testing arrangements must be made when the candidate registers for the examination with PSI.


QUESTION: How many questions and how long are the Massachusetts Electrician exams?

The Master Electrician exam:​ consists of a two-part exam. Part 1 is 90 NEC multiple-choice knowledge questions. Test takers have 240 Minutes to complete this portion of the exam. Part 2 is 50 business and law questions. Test takers have 120 Minutes to complete this portion of the exam. The exam is computer-based.

The Journeyman Electrician exam:  consists of a two-part exam. Part 1 is 80 NEC multiple-choice knowledge questions. Test takers have 180 Minutes to complete this portion of the exam. Part 2 is 30 questions for the applied portion. Test takers have 60 Minutes to complete this portion of the exam. The exam is computer-based.

The following codebooks are allowed by the testing center.

  • The NFPA 70 – National Electrical Code, 2023 Edition.

QUESTION: What can I bring to the PSI testing center?

ANSWER:

  • Approved references (See page 6-7)
    • Formulas- prior to examination – written on the blank pages of your codebook.
    • Written notes- prior to examination Handwritten notes in the margins of the aforementioned reference materials.
    • During the examination – only writing on the scrap paper that is provided by PSI will be allowed during the exam.
  • Prescription eyeglasses
  • Calculator- only non-programmable, non-printing, silent, battery-operated, non-alphabet keys.

ANSWER: PSI Services. PSI maintains 5 testing locations across Massachusetts.

QUESTION: Why should someone study this course if the Massachusetts electrical license exam is an open-book exam?

ANSWER: The electrical licensing exam is very challenging and usually requires a month or more of preparation to pass.

The 2023 NEC is a large and complex publication containing over 800 pages of code. It is challenging to locate each correct article and answer in the time allowed during the exam without thorough preparation.
