QUESTION: Who is required to have a Maryland Electrician license?

ANSWER: All individuals engaged as Master or Journeyperson Electricians performing work must be licensed by the Maryland State Board of Electricians.


QUESTION: What are the qualifications required for taking the Maryland Electrician exam?

Master Electrician:

  1. The applicant must have engaged or employed regularly and principally in providing electrical services for all types of electrical equipment and apparatus for at least 7 years while under the direction and supervision of: (
    • A Master Electrician,
    • OR: A similarly qualified employee of a governmental unit.
  2. The State Board may allow an applicant up to 3 years of credit toward the experience required with proof that the applicant has completed a formal course of study or professional training in electrical installation comparable to the required experience. (Allow an additional 2 months for this review.)
  3. An ORIGINAL form of certification of experience and evidence of any formal course of study must be furnished by the applicant with the registration for examination.

Journeyperson Electrician:

1. The applicant must have engaged or employed regularly and principally in providing electrical services for all types of electrical equipment and apparatus for at least 3 years while under the direction and supervision of:

  • A Master Electrician
  • OR: a similarly qualified employee of a governmental unit.

2. The State Board may allow an applicant up to 3 years of credit toward the experience required with proof that the applicant has completed a formal course of study or professional training in electrical installation comparable to the required experience. (Allow an additional 2 months for this review.)

3. An ORIGINAL form of certification of experience and evidence of any formal course of study must be furnished by the applicant with the registration for examination.


QUESTION: Is there reciprocity in Maryland for the electrician exams?

ANSWER: The West Virginia State Fire Marshal and the Maryland Board of Electricians have entered into an agreement to waive the written exam for any individual who currently holds a master electrician license issued by either Maryland or West Virginia, which is in good standing, if the individual has passed the written license exam to obtain the other state’s master electrician license, and is otherwise qualified.

  • An individual who is licensed by the West Virginia State Fire Marshal may apply to the State Board of Electricians without having to take the Maryland written licensure exam, so long as the applicant passed the licensure exam in West Virginia and has held the license for at least two years, in good standing.

Individuals holding a Delaware license in good standing for at least five years who passed the exam in Delaware may also apply for licensure without taking the Maryland written exam.


QUESTION: How do I sign up for the Maryland Electrician exam?

ANSWER: You must fill out and submit the Individual Examination Application paper form and all PSI documentation. (Applications are in the back of the Examination Candidate Information Bulletin)​

Upon approval of your registration materials, PSI will confirm your eligibility to take the examination by mailing you a confirmation notice which authorizes you to call to make a test appointment. If you do not receive a confirmation notice within three weeks of sending your registration materials, call (855) 898-0715 to confirm your status at PSI.

QUESTION: Are there any accommodations for the Maryland Electrician exams?

QUESTION: How many questions and how long are the Maryland Electrician licensing exams?

The Master Electrician exam consists of 90 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 240 minutes to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

The Journeyperson Electrician exam consists of 70 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 210 minutes to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

The following codebooks are allowed by the testing center.

ANSWER:
