QUESTION: Who is required to have an Alaska Electrical Administrator license?
ANSWER: The Alaska Division of Corporations, Business, and Professional Licensing must license any individual engaged in the electrical contracting business or performing work as an Unlimited Commercial Wiring (UCW) Administrator or Residential Wiring (RW) Administrator.
QUESTION: What are the qualifications required to take the Alaska Electrical Administrator exam?
Unlimited Commercial Wiring: An applicant for an electrical administrator license in the unlimited commercial wiring category shall furnish proof satisfactory to the department that the applicant has
(1) practical experience as a journeyman electrician in inside commercial wiring for at least four of the six years immediately preceding the date of application;
(2) construction management experience in inside wiring as a field superintendent or similar position in inside wiring for at least four of the six years immediately preceding the date of application;
(3) a combination of practical experience as a journeyman electrician in inside commercial wiring and construction management experience as a field superintendent or similar position in inside commercial wiring for at least four of the six years immediately preceding the date of application;
(4) a degree in electrical engineering from a nationally or regionally accredited college or university plus practical experience as a journeyman electrician or field engineer in inside commercial wiring for at least one of the three years immediately preceding the date of application;
(5) registration in the state as a professional electrical engineer plus management experience in the electrical construction industry as a field engineer or in a similar position for at least one of the three years immediately preceding the date of application;
OR; (6) experience as a journeyman electrician in inside commercial wiring for three of the six years immediately preceding the date of application and
(A) one year of experience during those six years as a certified electrical inspector for a state or municipality;
(B) one year of experience during those six years as a full-time electrical instructor at a college, university, or trade school that is nationally or regionally accredited or approved by the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education;
OR; (C) completion of a curriculum that the division determines is related to inside commercial wiring at a college, university, or trade school that is nationally or regionally accredited or approved by the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education.
Residential Wiring: An applicant for an electrical administrator license in the residential wiring category shall furnish proof satisfactory to the department that the applicant has practical experience as a journeyman residential wireman for at least two of the four years immediately preceding the date of application.
QUESTION: Is there reciprocity in Alaska for the Electrical Administrator exams?
ANSWER: The state of Alaska has reciprocal agreements with Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas for electrical administrator licenses.
QUESTION: How do I sign up for the Alaska Electrical Administrator exam?
ANSWER: You must fill out and submit an application to The State of Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing.
Upon approval from the department, you will be sent an Examination Eligibility Letter, along with instructions for registering and scheduling the examination. Included with your letter will be an identification number assigned by the State to you for this testing program. You must use this identification number when scheduling for your examination.
- The eligibility letter is valid for 1 year from the date on the letter. If you fail the examination, you may retake the examination an unlimited number of times during the 1 year period.
A third-party testing center, PSI Exams administers the exam. You can sign up online or over the phone at (855) 746-8173.

ANSWER: All PSI examination centers are equipped to provide access in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and exam accommodations will be made in meeting a candidate’s needs. Unlimited Commercial Wiring Administrator: consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 4 hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.
Residential Wiring Administrator: consists of 75 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 180 minutes to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.
