QUESTION: Who is required to have a Montana Electrician license?

ANSWER: All individuals engaged as Master, Journeyman, or Residential Electricians performing work must be licensed by the Montana State Electrical Board.


QUESTION: What are the qualifications required for taking the Montana Electrician exam?

QUESTION: Is there reciprocity in Montana for the electrician exams?

Master Electrician: Currently there are no reciprocity agreements.

Journeyman or Residential: AK, AR, CO, IA, ID, ME, MN, ND, NE, NH, NM, OK, SD, TX, WI, WY (Board staff will obtain a license verification from these states.) Conditions of reciprocity are that your license is currently active, and in good standing, and the license has been held for 1 year from a reciprocal exam State listed above.


QUESTION: How do I sign up for the Montana Electrician exam?

ANSWER: You must fill out and submit an application to the Montana State Board of Electrical.

Upon Approval from the board, you will receive an admission letter. This notification will also be submitted to PSI.

  • For the fastest and most convenient examination scheduling process, PSI recommends that you register for your examinations using the Internet. You register online by accessing PSI’s registration website at www.psiexams.com. Internet registration is available 24 hours a day.
  • OR; Call (855) 746-8173- PSI registrars are available to receive payment and to schedule your appointment for the examination.

QUESTION: Are there any accommodations for the Montana Electrician exams?

ANSWER: All examination centers are equipped to provide access in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and every reasonable accommodation will be made in meeting a candidate’s needs. Candidates who require special accommodations will need to complete the necessary forms prior to registering for an exam with PSI. Please contact the board office for more information or download the ADA form at www.electrician.mt.gov under the “Forms” tab. You will need to have your care provider complete this form in order to be approved for your accommodation.


QUESTION: How many questions and how long are the Montana Electrician licensing exams?

Master Electrician: consists of 80 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 240 minutes to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

Journeyman Electrician: consists of 60 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 180 minutes to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

Residential Electrician: consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 150 minutes to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

The following codebooks are allowed by the testing center.

  • The NFPA 70 – National Electrical Code, 2020 Edition.

QUESTION: What can I bring into the PSI testing center?

ANSWER:

  • Approved references
  • You will have access to an online calculator.
    • OR; A non-programmable calculator that is silent, battery operated, does not have paper tape printing capabilities, and does not have a keyboard containing the alphabet will be allowed in the examination site.

QUESTION: Where do I go to take my Montana Electrician license exams?

ANSWER: There are nationwide examination centers. You will be provided with the locations upon scheduling for your examination.


QUESTION: Why should someone study this course if the Montana electrician license exam is an open-book test?

ANSWER: The electrical licensing exam is a very challenging test and usually requires a month or more of preparation to pass.

The 2020 NEC is a large and complex publication containing over 800 pages of code. It is challenging to locate each correct article and answer in the time allowed during the exam without thorough preparation.
