QUESTION: Who is required to have an Kentucky Electrical License?
ANSWER: The Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet Department of Housing, Buildings, and Construction Licensing Branch must license any individual engaged in the electrical contracting business or performing work as a Master Electrician or Journeyman Electrician.
QUESTION: What are the qualifications required for taking the Kentucky Electrician exam?
Master Electrician:
- Minimum of 8 years (16,640 hours or 96 months) of full-time work as an electrician.
- You may send proof of 6 years of experience with completion of an approved apprenticeship training program consisting of a minimum of 576 classroom hours.
- OR; You may send proof of 5 years of experience and an associate’s degree or diploma in electrical technology at a college within the Kentucky Community and Technical College System after 1998.
Journeyman Electrician:
- Minimum of 4 years (6400 hours or 48 months) of full-time work as an electrician.
- You may send proof of 2 years of a minimum 4-year training course in electrical work acceptable to the department and shall complete the remaining years of that training course within 4 years of obtaining the electrician license or the license shall be revoked
- OR; You may send proof of 2 years of experience and an associate’s degree or diploma in electrical technology at a college within the Kentucky Community and Technical College System after 1998.
QUESTION: Is there reciprocity in Kentucky for the electrician exams?
ANSWER: Kentucky has electrical license reciprocity with Ohio, Louisiana, West Virginia, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
QUESTION: How do I sign up for the Kentucky Electrician exam?

QUESTION: Are there any accommodations for the Kentucky Electrician exams?
PROV: Prov complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in providing special accommodations for candidates who require additional assistance during the testing process. If candidates feel that they qualify for special accommodation during testing, they should contact Prov at (866) 720-7768. Prov will require written documentation from a licensed physician or psychologist documenting the disability and further require a request describing the requested remedy. Prov will then work directly with the candidates to make the accommodations they will need in order to complete their examination.
QUESTION: How many questions and how long are the Kentucky Electrician licensing exams?
The Master Electrician exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 4 Hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.
The Journeyman Electrician exam consists of 80 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 3 Hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.
The testing centers allow the following codebooks:
- The NFPA 70 – National Electrical Code, 2017, 2020, or 2023 Edition depending on which year you are testing on.
QUESTION: What can I bring to the testing center?
- Pencils. (Paper/pencil testing only)
- Calculator.

QUESTION: Where do I go to take my Kentucky Electrician license exams?
PROV: PROV maintains 11 testing locations across Kentucky.

QUESTION: Will PROV review my results if I fail?
ANSWER: You may request a review of your exam only after failing an exam category a minimum of two (2) times. To be eligible for a review, you must score within 10 points of the required passing score. The review for all tests is 1-1/2 hours in length. During the review, you will be presented with the questions you missed on your most recent examination. Additionally, you will receive the answers you chose for those questions. The review will be conducted under the same testing conditions as the exam using the same test security rules.
- The cost of the review is the same as the exam fees and is based on when you wish to review your test. Candidates will request or schedule a review using the same methods described earlier for scheduling.
QUESTION: Why should someone study this course if the Kentucky electrician license exam is an open-book test?
ANSWER: The electrical licensing exam is a very challenging test and usually requires a month or more of preparation to pass.
The 2017 NEC is a large and complex publication containing over 800 pages of code. It is challenging to locate each correct article and answer in the time allowed during the exam without thorough preparation.
Our course is designed to familiarize you with the 2017 NEC. You will know precisely how to find the correct answers in the code when you take your exam.

The Electrical Licensing Exam is an open-book code exam. To pass, you must continuously reference the 2017 National Electrical Code.
