QUESTION: Who is required to have a Washington Electrician license?

ANSWER: (Residential Master or Residential Electrician) You must have a valid electrical certificate or license from the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries to do electrical work in Washington.

Administrators are not certified to work as an installer in the electrical trade, unless they also carry an electrician certificate, or electrical trainee certificate and work under the supervision of a certified electrician.


QUESTION: What are the qualifications required for taking the Washington Electrician exam?

Residential Master Electrician: 

  • Journey-level master electrician: To qualify for the master electrician exam you must be certified as a general journey-level electrician by L&I for at least 4 years.
  • Specialty master electrician: To qualify for the exam you must be certified by L&I in a specialty, for at least 2 years.

Residential Administrator:

  • You must take and pass the administrator exam for the specialty you would like to be certified in. There are no prerequisites to take the administrator exam.

QUESTION: Is there reciprocity in Washington for the electrician exams?

ANSWER: In general, you are eligible for an Oregon reciprocal license if you possess a:

  • General journey level electrician (01) certificate obtained by passing a Washington examination that you qualified for by completing an approved Washington or equivalent apprenticeship program
  • OR; Washington master general journey level electrician (01) certificate.
    • If this does not describe you, you are not eligible.

QUESTION: How do I sign up for the Washington Electrician exam?

ANSWER: You must fill out and submit the Individual Examination Application form to the Washington Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs to be approved to take the exam.

Once you have been approved by L&I, you are responsible for contacting PSI to schedule an appointment to take the examination. You may either schedule via the Internet at https://test-takers.psiexams.com/walaborind, or schedule over the telephone at (855) 834-8751.

    • You have one year from your approval date to pass all sections of the examination.

QUESTION: Are there any accommodations for the Washington Electrician exams?

ANSWER: All examination centers are equipped to provide access in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and exam accommodations will be made in meeting a candidate’s needs. Applicants with disabilities or those who would otherwise have difficulty taking the examination must contact L&I for approval for exam accommodations.

QUESTION: How many questions and how long are the Washington Electrician licensing exams?

The Residential Master Electrician exam consists of 90 multiple-choice questions broken down into 3 sections. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

  • Test takers have 3 hours to complete the NEC & Theory
  • Test takers have 1 hour to complete the WA Codes
  • Test takers have 2 hours to complete the Major Load Calculations

The Residential Electrician exam consists of 57 multiple-choice questions broken down into 2 sections. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

  • Test takers have 2 hours to complete the NEC & Theory
  • Test takers have 1 hour to complete the WA Codes

The Residential Administrator exam consists of 71 multiple-choice questions broken down into 3 sections. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.
