QUESTION: Who is required to have a Colorado Electrician license?
ANSWER: The Colorado State Electrical Board must license any individual who is engaged in the electrical contracting business or is performing work as a Residential Wireman, Journeyman Wireman, or a Master Electrician.
QUESTION: What are the qualifications required for taking the exam?
Requirements are as follows for the following Electrical Licences.
RESIDENTIAL WIREMAN:
- Must demonstrate 4000 hours of residential-only experience gained in no less than two years.
JOURNEYMAN WIREMAN:
- Must demonstrate 8000 hours of experience gained in no less than four years. 4000 hours must be commercial/industrial work.
MASTER ELECTRICIAN: (Choose only one)
- Must either; Graduate as an electrical engineer of an accredited college or university AND possess 2,000 hours of construction experience earned in no less than one year, OR Graduate from an electrical trade school or community college AND possess 8,000 hours of experience acquired in no less than four years, OR be a licensed Journeyman Wireman with 2,000 hours of additional experience while licensed earned in no less than one year.
QUESTION: How do I sign up for the exam?
ANSWER: You must fill out and submit the Individual Examination Application online form to the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies to be approved to take the exam.
Upon approval from the Board, you will receive a notification letter via mail. You will then be responsible for contacting PSI to pay and schedule for the examination. If you fail, you may retest unlimited during your eligibility period.
The exam is administered by a third-party testing center, PSI Exams. You can contact PSI with any questions at (800) 733-9267 Hours of operation are Monday through Friday between 5:30 am, and 8:00 pm or Saturday-Sunday between 7:00 am and 3:30 pm, Mountain Time.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE EXAM:
The Colorado Residential Wireman, Colorado Journeyman Wireman, and Colorado Master Electrician exam is an open-book examination. Specified reference materials will be provided by the testing facility.
The Colorado Electrician exam is an open book four answers per question, multiple-choice exam. Some questions may require mathematical computation.
All exam questions are written to provide only one BEST answer and NOT written as trick questions.

Applicants for the Residential Wireman license must demonstrate a minimum of 4,000 hours of work experience.
Applicants for the Journeyman Electrician license must demonstrate a minimum of 8,000 hours of work experience earned in no less than four years, of which 4,000 hours of work experience must be in commercial or industrial work. Additionally, 288 hours of classroom education is required for applicants currently registered as an apprentice.
Applicants for the Master Electrician license must either; Graduate as an electrical engineer of an accredited college or university AND possess 2,000 hours of construction experience earned in no less than one year. OR Graduate from an electrical trade school or community college AND possess 8,000 hours of experience acquired in no less than four years, OR be a licensed Journeyman with 2,000 hours of additional experience while licensed earned in no less than one year.
