QUESTION: Who is required to have a South Carolina Electrician license?

ANSWER: All individuals engaged as Master or Journeyperson Electricians performing work must be licensed by the Municipal Association of South Carolina.


QUESTION: What are the qualifications required for taking the South Carolina Electrician exam?

Master Electrician: An applicant must be a journeyman and submit documentation of four full years of experience.

    • If an applicant can submit documentation for ten years of experience in the trade, the journeyman requirement can be waived.

Journeyman Electrician: An applicant must have two full years of experience.

    • *Completion of a two-year degree from an accredited technical college can be counted as one year of experience.

Master Residential Electrician: An applicant must be a journeyman and submit documentation of four full years of experience.

    • If an applicant can submit documentation for ten years of experience in the trade, the journeyman requirement can be waived.

Journeyman Electrician Residential: An applicant must have two full years of experience.

    • *Completion of a two-year degree from an accredited technical college can be counted as one year of experience.

QUESTION: Is there reciprocity in South Carolina for the electrician exams?

ANSWER: Journeyman and master electrician certificates are only valid in South Carolina.

QUESTION: Are there any accommodations for the South Carolina Electrician exams?

ANSWER: Prov complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in providing special accommodations for candidates that require additional assistance during the testing process.

  • If candidates feel that they qualify for a special accommodation during testing, they should contact Prov at (866) 720-7768. Prov will require written documentation from a licensed physician or psychologist documenting the disability and further require a request describing the requested remedy. Prov will then work directly with the candidates to make the accommodations they will need in order to complete their examination.

QUESTION: How many questions and how long are the South Carolina Electrician licensing exams?

The Master Electrician exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 4 hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

The Journeyman Electrician exam consists of 70 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 3 hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

The Master Residential Electrician exam consists of 65 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 3 hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

The Journeyman Electrician Residential exam consists of 65 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 3 hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

The following codebooks are allowed by the testing center.

QUESTION: What can I bring into the Prov testing center?

ANSWER:

QUESTION: Where do I go to take my South Carolina Electrician license exams?

ANSWER: Prov has established six (6) testing centers within South Carolina where candidates can take their examinations. These testing centers are located in Charleston, Columbia, Conway, Greenville (2), and Greenwood.
