QUESTION: Who is required to have an Virginia Electrical License?

ANSWER: All individuals engaged as all Master Electricians and all Journeyman Electricians performing work, must be licensed by the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation.


QUESTION: What are the qualifications required for taking the Virginia Electrician exam?

QUESTION: Is there reciprocity in Virginia for the electrician exams?

ANSWER: Virginia has reciprocity for electrical contractor licenses from Alabama, the District of Columbia, Kentucky, Maryland, West Virginia, and North Carolina. For detailed information please call 804-367-8511.


QUESTION: How do I sign up for the Virginia Electrician exam?

ANSWER: Before scheduling a test, you must first submit an application to the DPOR.

Upon approval: You will then contact PSI to pay and schedule the examination.

  • For the fastest and most convenient examination scheduling process, PSI recommends that you pay and register for your examination using the Internet. You pay and register online by accessing PSI’s registration website at https://testtakers.psiexams.com/vacon.
  • If you send in a paper mail registration: Please allow 2 weeks to process your registration. After 2 weeks, you may go online or call PSI to schedule the examination.

QUESTION: Are there any accommodations for the Virginia Electrician exams?

ANSWER: All PSI examination centers are equipped to provide access in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and exam accommodations will be made to meet a candidate’s needs. A candidate with a disability or a candidate who would otherwise have difficulty taking the examination must follow the instructions on the Exam Accommodations Request Form.


QUESTION: How many questions and how long are the Virginia Electrician licensing exams?

The Master Electrician exam consists of 90 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 270 minutes to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

The Journeyman Electrician exam consists of 70 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 210 minutes to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.
