QUESTION: Who is required to have an Kentucky Electrical License?

ANSWER: The Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet Department of Housing, Buildings, and Construction Licensing Branch must license any individual engaged in the electrical contracting business or performing work as a Master Electrician or Journeyman Electrician.

QUESTION: What are the qualifications required for taking the Kentucky Electrician exam?

Master Electrician:

  • Minimum of 8 years (16,640 hours or 96 months) of full-time work as an electrician.
  • You may send proof of 6 years of experience with completion of an approved apprenticeship training program consisting of a minimum of 576 classroom hours.
    • OR; You may send proof of 5 years of experience and an associate’s degree or diploma in electrical technology at a college within the Kentucky Community and Technical College System after 1998.

Journeyman Electrician:

  • Minimum of 4 years (6400 hours or 48 months) of full-time work as an electrician.
  • You may send proof of 2 years of a minimum 4-year training course in electrical work acceptable to the department and shall complete the remaining years of that training course within 4 years of obtaining the electrician license or the license shall be revoked
    • OR; You may send proof of 2 years of experience and an associate’s degree or diploma in electrical technology at a college within the Kentucky Community and Technical College System after 1998.

QUESTION: Is there reciprocity in Kentucky for the electrician exams?

ANSWER: Kentucky has electrical license reciprocity with Ohio, Louisiana, West Virginia, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

PearsonVUE: 701 Kentucky Standard Master Electrician exam consists of 80 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 5 Hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

703 Kentucky Standard Journeyman Electrician exam consists of 80 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 4 Hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

PROV: The Master Electrician exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 4 Hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.

The Journeyman Electrician exam consists of 80 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 3 Hours to complete the exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer-based.
